ABOUT THE BOOK

Professor P.M. Kamath, has been an ardent nationalist and democrat. Whenever he has perceived a threat to the existence of India as a nation with a flourishing democracy, he has taken to pen to express himself in public. The highest level of threat-perceptions for his committed values arose from the rule under Mrs Indira Gandhi. He had published his early writings expressing his threat-perceptions to the nation and democratic rule under the title of Indian Politics under Mrs Gandhi: Reflective Essays (1993).

But even after her demise in October 1984, he continued to perceive persistence of threats to nation and democracy, because of harm caused to these cherished values by Mrs Gandhi were continued as gospel principles of governance by members of her family who succeeded to the party positions and acquired power over government. These Nation and democracy debilitating practices, were too many. Hence, have been thematically divided in two volumes. The Volume I of the Indian Politics after Mrs Indira Gandhi: Reflecting on Perversion of Political Power highlights in its nine chapters some of the nation and democracy threatening practices like political defections, use of article 356 to destabilise states in the Indian Federation, continued splits and mergers in ruling parties; political factions emerging as Political Parties and electoral process. It also critically looks at institutions of the democratic governance lik e the parliament, Prime Minister, President, Judiciary and administration.

He has put forward in these articles, his firm beliefs on certain essential reforms like treating political defection as 'contempt of electorate' and laying a ban on all defections. Federal Government introduction of ethics in government legislation, direct election of members of Councils of States. The book is an essential reading for those who look to the evolution of Indian politics and governance since early years, whether as a student of politics and governance or practitioner of politics at national or state level and all those who are interested in Indian Politics as alert citizens.
