ABOUT THE BOOK

The book ‘Floods, Pregnancy Outcomes, and Human Growth: An Anthropological investigation from Himalayas’explores the profound impact of natural disasters, particularly floods, on pregnancy outcome in terms of birth weight  and growth and development of the new-born, infants, toddler, school going children and adolescents with special reference to flood prone zone of Himalayan region. For further elucidation of facts information on pregnancy out, birth weight as well as anthropometric measurements were collected from Rudraprayag district of Uttarakhand state. The book examines the intricate relationship between environmental stressors and human health outcomes. A comparative analysis between flood-affected and non-flood-affected populations are being presented to understand the extent of the role of environmental factors on the growth pattern of the individuals aged 1-19 years of the age.

The book provides a detailed ethnographic profile of Rudraprayag, showcasing its unique geographical, historical, and cultural significance. It highlights the challenges faced by communities living in disaster-prone areas and examines how floods exacerbate existing health disparities by disrupting access to healthcare, affecting maternal nutrition, and increasing stress levels. Supported by statistical analyses and comparisons, it uncovers critical patterns in birth weights, growth trends, and sex-specific disparities in flood-affected regions.

By addressing the intersection of human biology and environmental challenges, this book emphasizes the importance of sustainable development and targeted interventions to mitigate the adverse effects of disasters on vulnerable populations. It offers actionable recommendations for improving healthcare, nutrition, and disaster management strategies, making it an invaluable resource for researchers, policymakers, public health professionals, and students interested in anthropology, disaster management, and public health.
