ABOUT THE BOOK

The present work is a guide for those who want to learn application of geographic information system (GIS) in census studies with particular focus on workforce and social indicators. The book would be helpful for gender specialists, social scientists, economists, environmentalists, policy makers, and entrepreneurs who are interested in village level spatial analysis of census data. Book may also be used by those who have interest in socio-economy in biodiversity hot-spots. The book involves spatial analysis of 38 census variables for the year 1991, 55 variables for the year 2001 and 2011 each, and 30 variables which are used for the first time in 2011 census survey in India. The study also includes spatial analysis of indicators derived from the census variables. There are 62, 55, and 85 indicators for the years 1991, 2001, and 2011 respectively. Individual codes and expression (mathematical formula) are used for variables and indicators respectively, for the spatial analysis.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Dr. Pulak Das is faculty in the School of Human Ecology, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar University Delhi, Kashmere Gate, Lothian Road, Delhi. He teaches remote sensing and GIS, and Environmental impact assessment (EIA) to post graduate students. His specialization is in application of remote sensing and GIS in natural resource management, and human ecology; environmental monitoring and management with particular reference to developmental interventions such as hydroelectric power projects, oil and gas exploration drillings, linear projects, and green infrastructures. He has done extensive field work in Barak valley, Assam, India for EIA and social impact assessment (SIA) for communities affected by oil and gas drilling projects.

Dr. Purkayastha is a researcher in the interdisciplinary field of nature, culture, and ecology. She is Co-Founder Dr.Pinki and Director General of the Centre for Research in Ecology, Environment, and Sustainability Science (www.creess.org), and All India Vice President of Surnandan Bharati, Kolkata (surnandanbharati.org). She has been working on life, livelihood, folklore, and cultural ecology of communities like the Kaivartya community and tea garden community (Nunia) of southern Assam, and Baiga community of Madhya Pradesh, India. She has authored 8 books and has more than 30 publications in scientific journals, newspapers, and magazines of national and international reputation.
