ABOUT THE BOOK

An extensive amount of documentation (including the author's own published contributions) exists on Nawabi Lucknow that describes, analyzes and offers in-depth insights into the art, culture and life-styles of that remarkable period spanning 130 years (1722 - 1856). In contrast, there is a significant lack of awareness about Colonial Lucknow, which formally lasted for 92 years. This is surprising, given the considerable impact the British had on the development of the city, encompassing landscaping, the establishment of public facilities, the creation of institutions, and the construction of notable architectural landmarks, many of which are extant today.

This book is not intended to be a comprehensive treatise or historical account of those tumultuous times; instead, it is a modest endeavour to chronicle certain overlooked challenges, experiences, and successes of Colonial Lucknow from 1856 to 1947, aiming to present this information to readers in an interesting and succinct manner.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

PC Sarkar, former Principal Scientist, ICAR, Govt. of India, holds a Ph.D in organic chemistry. He is an alumnus of St Francis’ College, Lucknow, Lucknow Christian College and University of Lucknow. In addition to a specialized book on chemistry and about a hundred research publications in national and international journals pertaining to his scientific profession, Dr Sarkar has to his credit, a series of articles on Lucknow, which appeared in the Heritage Page of the Lucknow Tribune during 2013-14. He is active in several fora related to the conservation of tangible / intangible heritage, particularly related to Lucknow. An avid traveler, he has criss-crossed the country, and also visited foreign shores in a bid to fulfill his passion. This is his fifth book on the lost and forgotten heritage of Lucknow.
