ABOUT THE BOOK 

The North Eastern Region comprises eight states. The region has myriad variegated tribes and groups and has vast natural resources. Every community has its own unique culture, traditional symbols and history. Despite of such heterogeneous nature of these communities, there are some similarities in overall culture among them. Therefore, one may particularly described the tribes in North East India as homogeneous yet heterogeneous. Because of such as homogeneous - heterogeneous paradox,different socio cultural issues are similar in broad but different if one looks into minutely. Aspect of culture such as food, drink, fairs and festivals, dance and music, indigenous knowledge such as ethno medicinal practices, magico-religious beliefs and practices and folklores, conversion into Christianity and so many such aspects of the tribes of North East India show similarity. However, if one minutely examines, there are so many other aspects of dissimilarities. For instance, the Meitei of Manipur which is not included in the scheduled tribe list of the North East India has a very highly rich culture, history and indigenous scripts unlike any other tribes of North East India. This volume attempts to discern different sociocultural practices of the ethnic people of North East India with special focus to ethnic people of Assam.

ABOUT THE AUTHoR
Prof. Haobijam Vokendro, M.Sc Gold Medalist, NET, B.Ed, Ph.D, has been teaching anthropology in the past 24 years. Currently ProfessorVokendro is heading the
department of anthropology, Rajiv Gandhi University, Rono Hills, Doimukh, Arunachal Pradesh. He has completed six research projects. Besides publications of manynational and international research papers, he also has participated and chaired in national and international seminars, conferences and workshops. He has so far authored four books. He is the chairman of the BPGS inanthropology, Rajiv Gandhi University and BPGS member for tribal studies, sociology and social work, Rajiv Gandhi University and department of anthropology, NEHU. He is editorialboard member, SKWC Interdisciplinary social science journal (ISSN2278-2737). More than dozen of MPhil scholars and two Ph.D. scholar have been awarded under his supervision and eight Ph.D. and four M.Phil. scholars are guiding under him.

Milonjyoti Borgohainis presently working asan Assistant Professor in Department of Anthropology, Moridhal College, Dhemaji, Assam. He did his Post Graduation in Physical Anthropology from Dibrugarh University, Assam, in 2012 and M.Phil. from Rajiv Gandhi University, Arunachal Pradesh in 2019. He did two years postgraduate diploma in Disaster Management under Dibrugarh University, Assam in2010. He has published various research papers in national and international journals. His areas of interest are overweight, obesity and its covariates, human growth and development, indigenous health practices, bio-social studies, migration.Currently, he is pursuing his Ph.D in the Depar t ment of Anthropology, Cotton University, Guwahati. He has cleared both NET and SET exams
