ABOUT THE BOOK
Reforming the Republic: One Nation, One Election in India examines one of the most significant and debated proposals for reforming India’s electoral and democratic system. The idea of “One Nation, One Election” seeks to synchronize elections to the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies, with the objective of reducing the frequency and financial burden of elections and ensuring greater continuity in governance and public administration. The book presents a comprehensive and analytical examination of the constitutional, political, administrative, economic and federal dimensions of simultaneous elections. It explores the historical experience of synchronized elections in the early decades of the Republic, the reasons for their disruption, and the contemporary arguments for restoring electoral synchronisation. It also critically examines concerns relating to federalism, political accountability, voter choice, regional representation, constitutional amendments and the functioning of parliamentary democracy. Bringing together diverse scholarly perspectives, the volume seeks to move beyond partisan arguments and encourage informed academic debate. It assesses whether simultaneous elections can strengthen democratic governance while preserving India’s federal character and constitutional values. The book will be useful to researchers, teachers, students of political science and public administration, policymakers, legal scholars, and all those interested in the future of Indian democracy and institutional reform.
