ABOUT THE BOOK

Jharkhand is a significant region where layers of ancient, medieval and modern manners and traditions prominently co-exist.

Around hundred years ago, the British who ruled over the region meticulously documented the environment, history and sociology of the region and described in details its trade, education, communication, customs, health and medicine. These documents were called ‘Gazetteers.’ For Jharkhand region they produced Gazetteers on each of the six districts those days: Palamu (1907), Santal Parganas (1910), Singhbhum (1910), Manbhum (1911), Hazaribagh (1917) and Ranchi (1917).

The British worked with certain biases and prejudices. Still, these Gazetteers serve as historical treasure trove that unveils the rich fabric of the region during a pivotal period of history. These Gazetteers permit readers to immerse themselves in the nuanced description of the condition and forces that shaped the British time Jharkhand.

This series would serve as an invaluable source for anyone studying history, sociology, anthropology or any aspects of Jharkhand.
